5 Steps to Self Mastery

20110505-115236.jpg

I was listening to hypnotist Marshall Sylver on a DVD series titled “Power Programming Live” as he talked about the five steps to creating total Self Mastery. It was great! It really answered a lot of questions and gave me a lot of insight.

The five steps are as follows:

Belief

Marshall stated that in order for things to change, we must change. We can’t expect to keep doing what doesn’t work and expect to get good results. This goes back to the definition if insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

In order to get better results in any area of our lives, we must be willing to change and do things differently. Different actions equal different results.

Personal Programming

The best way for me to explain this is to use the analogy of a computer. A computer only does what we program it to do. A computer will not do any type of calculations unless it has a software program installed that makes it do it calculations.

Same with people. You won’t do what you’re supposed to do unless you program your self to do it. If you want to be good at running a business, you must study, read, work with a mentor or do whatever it takes to program yourself to be good in business. Just saying it will not make it happen so you must take steps to reprogramming yourself for success.

Planning

When I find the need to get back on track, I know I must take some time out and plan. I must get refocused on my goals and write out what I need to do to make it work. If I don’t plan, I’ll be all over the place and I won’t get anything done which is counterproductive.

Planning puts things in black and white and let’s me visualize what I need to do to be successful.

Discipline

This is a tough one for most people. Discipline is defined as a pattern of behavior. If people were more disciplined, they would be so much more successful than they are now. People would set in their minds to do what they needed to do and it would get done. I think this is the core principle to Self Mastery.

Passion

You should be passionate about everything that you do especially if you’re starting your own business. Passion will give you the determination to get up and make things happen. Not because you have to but because you want to. Passion is what makes life fun.

Now that you know what it takes for Self Mastery, go out and make things happen!

Clarity of Thought… A Worthy Goal

How to get clarity in thoughts

Have you ever worried about things so much that thinking through them becomes tough? Have so many options that you keep going in circles? In times of most need, thinking stops being clear. Here’s the way to get clarity in thoughts:

1. Write in points. No stories, just points.

Writing in points forces the mind to break things down into smaller logical units. Dealing with smaller logical units make things simple to understand. Points avoid going in circles, it avoids repetitions. Moreover, sometimes in extreme emotional state we tend to magnify things; be it positively or negatively. Writing points down helps to put them in the right perspective.

2. Create a table to compare details of all options.

Whenever you have to choose between varied alternatives and are having difficulty, try this. Having all the pros and cons of the options on one page definately helps the mind to process faster. Moreover, it ensures that you are not leaving any detail out. You can then simply start the process of eliminating weakest obvious option and be sure about your decision since the reasons are available on the page itself.

3. Draw a diagram to chart out your flows.

Ever had so many scenarios to think of that you lose track of them and get confused? Chart out all your if-else logic on a piece of paper / writing board. Having all your flows available at a glance helps in increasing focus and being able to simultaeneously work on all of them. Visuals also make it easy to explain the thought process to someone else.

4. Focus on one thing at a time.

Agreed it’s easy to multitask. But slow down. Do one thing at a time. Take one idea at a time. Put all your focus and energy on it. And then when you are sure you are done, move to the next. Sometimes, it’s really as simple as that.

5. Bounce your ideas / thoughts at someone.

Having someone to talk to and dumping all thoughts on is great. It clears your mind. In order to explain a complex thought to someone, you have to simplify things for them. This itself, creates clarity for you. As an added bonus, if the person is good, you might also get valuable inputs.

6. Are you really confused?

Sometimes, it’s you who’s confusing yourself to avoid making decisions. Reasons could vary – you don’t want to take responsibility, you don’t believe you can make the right decision etc. Stop doing so.

What is Self Mastery? – Part I

Self Mastery , alone, sounds like a selfish term; but if you cannot help yourself, you will have limited ability to help others. Self mastery is the ability to make the most out of your physical, mental, and spiritual health. In other words, to be the best you can be.

As a result of your efforts, you will be able to help everyone around you. In order for you to change the world around you, for the better, you have to change yourself for the better, along the way.

You cannot sit on a mountain top waiting for perfection before you help your fellow man. The time to help is now, and we must look at ourselves as works in progress. Appreciate yourself for who you are, what you are, and what you have accomplished so far.

Appreciate your friends, family, and associates for who they are. Accept them, as they are, without expecting perfection. This is a common mistake for parents to make with their children, but it also happens in a variety of relationships. So, let go of demands on others – especially unrealistic demands.

Where do we start learning the secrets of self mastery? If you accept things around you, without demand, you already have taken the first step. There are two important factors here.

1. Once you accept people, and situations, for what they are, you won’t waste time and energy with frustration. This causes inner frustration, emotional turmoil, worries, and depression.

2. Once you change yourself, through positive self mastery, the world around you will change for the better, without much effort on your part.

You will not be able to make all of the changes to mind, body, and spirit, at once, but they are connected.

The first large component is physical. Your body needs constant maintenance in a variety of methods: weight resistance, flexibility, and cardio-vascular strength, require you to cross train. So, if you have been on the couch too long, it is time to get off. This one physical change, of daily exercise, will help you in all aspects of life. You will feel better about yourself.

If you don’t have enough time for three types of exercise – practice at least one that will give you maximum benefits. Hatha Yoga, swimming, and martial arts are good recommendations, as each of them cross trains the body with fair variety.

In many Yoga classes, Sun Salutations are a series of postures – and the ultimate cross training exercise. Once you are familiar with them, you can practice at home. They require very little space and no equipment, although many Yoga practitioners do use a Yoga mat, or sticky mat, at home.

Paul Jerard is a co-owner and the director of Yoga teacher training at: Aura Wellness Center, in North Providence, RI. He has been a certified Master Yoga teacher since 1995. He is a master instructor of martial arts, with multiple Black Belts , four martial arts teaching credentials, and was recently inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He teaches Yoga, martial arts, and fitness to children, adults, and seniors in the greater Providence area. Recently he wrote: Is Running a Yoga Business Right for You? For Yoga students, who may be considering a new career as a Yoga teacher. http://ift.tt/14DqkQH
