Milkweed cures skin cancer – scientists say

A common weed could help cure skin cancers, claim researchers.

The sap from a plant known as petty spurge or milkweed – found by roadsides and in woodland – can ‘kill’ certain types of cancer cells when applied to the skin.

It works on non-melanoma skin cancers, which affect hundreds of thousands of Britons each year.

They are triggered by sun damage and, although not usually fatal, can be disfiguring without treatment.

The plant has been used for centuries as a traditional folk medicine to treat conditions such as warts, asthma and several types of cancer.

But for the first time a team of scientists in Australia has carried out a clinical study of sap from Euphorbia peplus, which is related to Euphorbia plants grown in gardens in the UK.

The study of 36 patients with a total of 48 non-melanoma lesions included basal cell carcinomas (BCC), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and intraepidermal carcinomas (IEC), a growth of cancerous cells confined to the outer layer of the skin.

Patients had failed to respond to conventional treatment including surgery, or they refused or were unsuitable for surgery because of their age.

The patients were treated once a day for three consecutive days by an oncologist using a cotton bud to apply enough of the E.peplus sap to cover the surface of each lesion.

The initial results were impressive, says findings to be released this week in the British Journal of Dermatology.

After only one month 41 of the 48 cancers had completely gone.

Patients who had some of the lesions remaining were offered a second course of treatment.

After an average of 15 months following treatment, two thirds of the 48 skin cancer lesions were still showing a complete response.

Of the three types of skin cancer tested, the final outcome was a 75 per cent complete response for IEC lesions, 57 per cent for BCC and 50 per cent for SCC lesions.

Side-effects were low, with 43 per cent of patients in no pain as a result of the treatment and only 14 per cent reporting moderate pain, and only one patient encountered severe short-term pain.

Latin name: Euphorbia peplus

Occurrence: Petty spurge is a small, branched annual, plentiful in gardens and arable fields.

Euphorbia peplus

It is native and common throughout the UK, in any kind of soil. The plant exudes a milky sap when damaged, which is a severe irritant if applied to the skin.

Biology: Petty spurge flowers from April to November. The seed number per plant ranges from 260 to 1,200.

Petty spurge may be found in fruit for eight months of the year. Seedlings emerge throughout the year except for in winter but the main flush is from April to May. Most seed germinates within a year of shedding.

Just a few seedlings emerge in the following 5 years. Germination occurs at 5 to 10 mm depth in soil.

Persistence and Spread: Seed recovered from house demolitions and archaeological digs and dated at 20, 25, 30 and 100 years old has been reported to germinate.

In all cases of successful treatment the skin was left with a good cosmetic appearance.

The researchers, from a number of medical institutions in Brisbane, attribute the benefit to the active ingredient ingenol mebutate which has been shown to destroy tumour cells.

British experts said further studies were needed and people should not try this at home as the weed sap can be harmful to the eyes and should not be eaten.

More than 76,500 people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer in the UK each year, with 90 per cent caused by ultraviolet light exposure.

Lesions usually appear on the areas most exposed to the sun, such as the head, neck, ears, and back of the hands.

Kimberley Carter of the British Association of Dermatologists said: ‘This is a very small test group so it will be interesting to see what larger studies and the development of the active ingredient in E. peplus sap will reveal.

‘Whilst it would not provide an alternative to surgery for the more invasive skin cancers or melanoma, in the future it might become a useful addition to the treatments available to patients for superficial, non-melanoma skin cancers.

‘Any advances that could lead to new therapies for patients where surgery is not an option are definitely worth investigating.

‘It is also very important to note that this is definitely not a treatment people should be trying out at home.

‘Exposure of the sap to mucous producing surfaces, such as the eyes, results in extreme inflammation and can lead to hospitalisation.

‘The concentration of the active ingredients in the sap also varies between different plants, with high doses able to cause very severe and excessive inflammatory responses.’

I found myself in the Astral

An astral experience

By Dimi

An experience in the astral

A little while ago, I found myself in the astral, but the simplicity of that experience is what struck me. It left me with such a deep impression of that moment in time. Why that event? I don’t know, but it has been something I wanted to share with others. Perhaps because of its simplicity; perhaps because it had all the hallmarks of astral projection; perhaps because it was the result of a conscious effort to get there; nonetheless, this is what unfolded…

I had woken up at 4am to do an astral practice. I had planned to start the practice with the mantra “O” and to then prepare the body with relaxation and focused concentration on the heart beats. I even placed my right hand on my chest in line with my heart (something I had not done before now), so that I could feel the heart beats more intensely to start with. I remained in that position for the entire practice.

My body got heavier. I could no longer feel my feet or the weight of my legs. I remembered where I had positioned my hands and arms, yet I could no longer feel them. I also knew that it was most important to remain still and to continue hearing and focusing on the heart beats, which had become louder and more easily felt throughout my body, pulsating, radiating outwards, helping this sensation in my body to expand and make me forget the feeling of having a body.

Then I felt a different sensation take over, one of numbness. It was accompanied by a tingling sensation throughout the body. At this point, I noticed this subtle temptation to move, to break the stillness and the concentration. It also introduced a level of tension in my mind and in my body. It was a crucial point. It became even more necessary to relax and to remain focused, concentrated on the heart beats.

By concentrating on the heat beats, focusing my attention on the sensations of each beat pulsating, I found myself easing back into the experience, without a thought in my mind, without any physical tension in my body. I had managed to relax back into the astral practice with my body and mind.

I began to feel the sensations of numbness yet again. I remained focused. The numbness remained but also developed into a tingling sensation that came over my body, soon followed by a natural lightness, a weightlessness that felt familiar. I took note of all these sensations, these changes going on from within, without judgment or comment, without disturbing or disrupting the flow. I began to feel even lighter.

Then I heard this clicking noise as though something had unlocked itself or become separated, accompanied by a buzzing noise – like that of engines – in my ears. It got louder. It too was familiar. That’s when I felt myself start to float up, to separate from my physical body.

I kept floating upwards, looking at the white ceiling above me. I could sense the outline of all the other objects in my room, but kept my focus at the ceiling as I continued floating upwards and closer to it. The ceiling fan did not get in my way as I kept floating. I got so close that my nose nearly touched it!

Instinctively I knew that I would continue floating up and through the ceiling. At that point, I decided to turn around, to do 180 degrees turn and face my bed. I knew I would see myself lying there, my body sleeping. In that instant, I found myself turning and facing downwards. Sure enough, there I was, lying in my bed, my physical body sleeping, resting. I wondered if this was real. I then found myself looking closer at the detail of my body laying there, my legs, the bed sheet, and my head and…my arm over my chest at the position of the heart!! I felt a smile come over from within. The confirmation of the realness of this experience was most welcomed.

I quickly felt myself float down much faster than floating up and enter my body almost like a flash. There I was, eyes opening up, awake in my body and… with my hand over my chest at the position of the heart. I stayed in that position for a while, letting the significance of what had happened sink in and so as not to forget the details of the experience.

Our Food Is Killing Us

Is Our Diet Killing Us?

by: Jason Hunter

Americans are spending 40 percent of their food dollars eating out. Our food is processed, refined, concentrated, sugared, salted, and chemically engineered to produce taste sensations high in calories and low in nutrients. Our cattle get fat in feedlots without exercise and with antibiotics and growth hormones. The result: bigger cattle producing juicier steaks containing nearly twice the fat as ranged cattle. In addition, we are paying dearly for these advances. Although we eat to live, what we eat is killing us.

The foods that we eat are causing most of the diseases that we are seeing in major numbers today. The statistics are real. In 1900, about 10 to 15 percent of Americans died of heart disease and strokes. Today it is 45 percent. Back then, less than 6 percent died of cancer, while today the figure is over 25 percent.

This is not nature’s way. We were not meant to die in such numbers from heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and from cancer of the lungs, breast, prostate, and colon. Significant cardiovascular disease started to emerge in America after World War I. It became rampant only after World War II, when people could afford diets rich in animal products and when the food industry started producing processed foods crammed with calories and emptied of nutrition.

This problem is unique to the westernized people. Rural populations in China and Southeast Asia who have little access to rich foods experience few heart attacks. Similarly, most people in rural Africa and South and Central America have little fear of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Yet in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and the increasingly rich countries in Europe and Asia, where diets are rich in fat and cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes are epidemic.

The villains, low fiber, high fat, and cholesterol, take their toll by damaging the body’s oxygen-carrying arteries and by upsetting important metabolic acts. Because of thickened, narrowed arteries, 4,000 Americans have heart attacks every day, every third adult has high blood pressure, and thousands are becoming crippled from strokes. Because of disordered metabolisms from unbalanced lifestyles, obesity is epidemic, and a new diabetic is diagnosed every 50 seconds.

The Right To Your Opinion

The Right To Your Own Opinion

By

opinion We all have a right to an opinion and it is important to be able to express yours. In life there are many opportunities to offer an opinion and yours is as valid as any other person’s. However, for some this is not an easy thing to do.

Why it matters

Being able to express your point of view will boost your confidence and enhance your happiness, knowing you are being true to yourself. By keeping quiet you are not being honest with yourself or other people. This can leave you feeling demoralized.

Why do people not give their opinions?

People who struggle to share their ideas may have low self-esteem. They may have come to believe through past experience that what they think simply does not matter, or is just not right. It may be that the person fears the consequences that may result from them having their say, believing only bad things can happen.

Developing an opinion

If your self-esteem is low, it may be that you are no longer even sure what your opinions are. However, it is possible to develop an opinion on anything you choose. Begin by taking note of everything you read, see, hear and experience. Then give an opinion on it. Do you like it, how does it make you feel, does it matter to you? Write your thoughts down in a journal. You may like to use a thesaurus to help you come up with words that best express how you feel. Such an exercise will give you the confidence to begin sharing your opinions with others.

How to give an opinion

Right Hand Rule - Day 139

The internet is a great way to share opinions. You could start a blog. For now you only need to share it with friends. Another way is to join a discussion group on something that interests you and have your say. Don’t worry too much about the responses you get — it’s about having the courage to freely express yourself. Given that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, you will come up against those who disagree with you. The trick is to not see it as a personal attack.

To help you assert yourself, try using imagery. Close your eyes and imagine yourself expressing an opinion. It could be to someone you need to confront, a small group of people, or a whole crowd. Really visualise the scenario and imagine yourself confidently stating your point of view. Keep practising, it’ll make you feel more confident and prepared for when the time comes to give your opinion.

Remind yourself that you are just offering an opinion — what really is the worst that can happen? If someone cannot respect your opinion, the problem lies with them, not you.

The opinions of others

Remember other people are entitled to their opinions and not everybody thinks the same way. As such, try to listen and respect the other person’s views, even if you do not agree with them.
