NLP Motivations and Behaviors

Neuro-Linguistic Programming – Manipulating One’s Beliefs, Motivations and Behaviors

nlp-man-from-web NLP examines our emotions, and asks us to think more carefully about why these emotions are arising. If we feel angry, or upset, happy or sad, it may seem obvious as to why the reason. We then go ahead and try and fix this problem as best we can. The problem is, sometimes we misread our emotional signals, ignore them, or cover up the real reasons behind why we feel that way.

Motivation plays an important part in Neuro-linguistic programming principals. It is certainly the case that people move towards pleasurable experiences, and way from the painful. We, however, are slightly lazy in this regard – short term effects will generally take precedence over the long term. For example, everyone knows that if they work out, then they will ultimately feel better, be stronger, and have more energy. The motivation is however, not necessarily there, as we don’t feel any short term benefits (and even feel short term pain and discomfort). On the other hand, we know that eating a chocolate bar will result in us being unhealthier and perhaps fatter in the future, but the short term gain is too tempting.

Neurons_NLP Neuro-linguistic programming takes the motivation behind our actions very seriously, and one of the main principals of the technique is learning how to take control of motivation. NLP can help one focus on the long term benefits of an action instead of the instant buzz of a short term fix.

Neuro-linguistic programming says that we, as people, begin to build up beliefs about the world in which we live, and we use these beliefs to govern our choices and behavior. Most of the time these follow obvious logic (e.g. fire is hot, don’t put your hand in a fire), but sometimes negative beliefs can be built up (e.g. don’t ask anyone out, because you will always be rejected). These negative beliefs can stem from a single interaction or an event in one’s life that begins to manifest itself and become very prominent in a person’s mind.

NLP is all about breaking these patterns, by giving people the tools to recognize their behavior, their beliefs, their motivations and their fears. Once one is able to see in what ways one’s beliefs may be incorrect or harmful, NLP techniques can help break these negative behaviors, and replace them with productive and useful behaviors.
