Celebrating You

“I am Fabulous”: Embracing and Celebrating You

by: Shelley Riutta MSE, LPC

“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire Universe, deserve your love and affection.” Buddha

“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”

Marianne Williamson

You are Fabulous! Yes YOU are. How do you feel when you hear that? Do you respond, yes that is right, I am Fabulous. Or do you have a reaction that blocks you from taking this statement in fully. If you are like most people you may not be able to take this in whole heartedly for various reasons. One, it may interrupt your inner litany of you telling yourself all the ways that you are less than fabulous—all the ways that you are messing up in some way, falling short of yours or other people’s expectations. You may have trouble taking in “I am fabulous” because you fear if you do that other people will think your arrogant and self-centered.

Why Self-Love is So Important

1. Seeing your own beauty and light allows you to see others more clearly. The fear that people have when they first start working on self-love is that they confuse it with being self-centered and arrogant. We all have within us an essence, a radiant Spirit that is filled with love, joy, creativity, compassion and beauty. When you really get that and are able to see this within you—you are able to see it within everybody. You can see beneath people’s protections of fear, negativity and anger and see the truth of who they are—the light of who they are.

2. Seeing your own Magnificence allows Good things into your Life. If you love and value yourself you will want good things for yourself and you will take action to bring these good things into your life. An example is if you are in a job that you don’t love—if you cared about yourself and your happiness you would take action to find a job or career that you really love. You wouldn’t allow yourself to be in an unloving situation in any area of your life. All the things that you would want for a person you deeply loved, you would want these things for yourself too.

3. Seeing your own Fabulousness allows others to see that in you too. People tend to see us and treat us how we see and treat ourselves. If you really value yourself and treat yourself kindly other people will pick up on this energy and treat you well too. An example of this: Do you know people you would never say anything disrespectful to because they emanate a sense of self-confidence and self-respect—it is so clear you can feel it.

4. When you see your own Brilliance you become a role model for people to see their own Brilliance. Our own self-love has a positive ripple effect on others—by providing a role model for healthy self-love and also energetically opening a space for people to love themselves just by being in our presence.

Ways to Love Yourself More

Take responsibility for seeing your own worth and lovability. Do you realize that your worth and lovability is intact and unchanging? Nothing you can do can ever take away from it—it is your intrinsic worth and can never be diminished. There is nothing to be improved upon and enhanced—you already are brilliant and magnificent just as you are. The real you, your Authentic Self, is here to just express itself fully and completely.

There is a distinction made between your Essence, who you really are– and your protective parts, your Ego. When you are in worry, judgment, fear, anxiety, depression, trying to control—these are all protective parts of you. If you are operating out of your protective self most of the time, you won’t feel the beauty of your essence and neither will those around you. Once you know that you really are your essence, this beautiful light—self-love is a natural consequence and you can relax and let this light shine!

Eliminate Self-Judgment and replace with Self-Supportiveness and Self-Appreciation. Your level of self-love will be dependent on the kind of internal dialogue you are having with yourself. We are all having inner conversations with ourselves throughout the day—these conversations are either loving and supportive or critical and unloving. The following are ways to shift to a more positive inner dialogue:

A. Think of statements that you want to hear throughout the day and write these on a 3X5 index card. They could be statements like “I love you just the way you are” “Just be you, you are wonderful” “I love you no matter what” “It’s OK to make mistakes, I will still love you” “Let go of what others think of you–I think you are amazing” Use these statements with yourself during the day.

B. Mirror back loving statements to yourself about who you are and how you handle things throughout the day. Examples of these statements are “I love the way you handled that situation” “You are so loving and kind” You are so creative!” “You are such a good listener” “You are brilliant” “You are sweet”. Mirroring back the positive will help you reverse the pattern of being critical with yourself for every little thing you do.

C. Talk back to the Critical Voice and bring in the Truth. If you catch yourself being critical respond back with a loving voice. If you say to yourself “I’m so stupid, I can’t believe I just said that” you can respond back by saying “It’s OK, you’re not stupid, what you said was just fine, just relax and be yourself, let go what that person thinks of you, I love you no matter what.”

D. Write 5 Appreciations about yourself each night in your journal. This can be ways you handled certain situations, how loving you were with others, your creativity, the special unique qualities that are YOU!

Start a “Celebration of Me” Journal. Get a beautiful journal that you can collect sweet notes and cards you receive from others. When the people around you have their hearts open and are sharing love with you—they are seeing the beauty of your essence. These loving cards and notes are reminders of who you really are and it can be helpful to have these in a lovely journal. You can even jot down loving comments people make to you and you can add these to your journal.

Take Loving Actions on your own behalf. If you tell yourself you love and care about you but you treat yourself poorly—your self-esteem will stay low. You must take actions that reflect a deep love for yourself. If you were to show love to yourself, you would exercise if you needed to lose weight, you would get to sleep early if you needed more rest, if your life was chaotic you would create balance, if you needed to leave an unhealthy relationship, you would leave it. Taking these loving actions can create a major shift in increasing your self-love significantly.

You are Fabulous—it is a given—and it is up to you to see it for yourself. By doing this you will radically improve the quality of your life, your relationships and even pave the way for others to see their own Magnificence too!

Can You Really Harness the Power of Your Mind?

by: Andre Judice, Ph.D., LPC, LMFT

Positive thinking, affirmations, and visualization are not just for fairy tales or feel good stories. We hear about using a positive outlook or visualization to improve our lives in many ways, but I also hear people make comments about their doubt about the actual effectiveness of this process.

There is well documented evidence in scientific journals that using a certain mindset or visualization can create a psychological or physical change compared to an equally matched group of people used in the studies that does not use any such techniques. In some cases, the degree of change can mirror that of the impact of the actual experience (instead of only having visualized it).

One example of this is study done at the University of Chicago, where the effect of visualization was noted with regard to the ability to shoot free throw shots. All participants were first tested to see what their “baseline” free throw shooting ability was without any intervention. Then they were separated in three groups: those that practiced for 30 days by shooting free throws, those that only visualized making free throw shots (without any direct practice,) and those that did not do anything at all. After 30 days, they were all tested again on their free throw percentages. The group that did not do anything showed no improvement. The group that had direct free throw practice each day showed 24% improvement, while the group that had indirect practice via visualization had 23% improvement. This means that practicing visualization each day accounted for almost as much improvement as direct practice did. And the good news is that there are many scientific studies that show the same results with using positive thinking and visualization when applied to a wide range of things.

So why does this actually work? I think there are two reasons. First, our brain takes in information and files it away no matter if it is something that really happened to us, something we think happened to us, or something we visualized. Although the encoding of information in our brains is a very detailed discussion, for our purposes it is only important to note that the brain does not discriminate between a direct or indirect experience when it comes to coding memory. So each time we visualize something, our brains take it in as real experience and files it accordingly, thus creating neural pathways to handle this information when continuously presented. The more we use a neural pathway, the more it becomes like an information “superhighway”, and it gets more prominent the more we use it. The end result is that our brains actually create a mental and physical expectancy about the free throw shooting experience. It creates an expectation of what needs to happen in our bodies to make this possible, thereby creating improvement. The second reason I think this works is that we actually have more of an ability to influence our outcomes than we might think, and visualization can also create a mental expectation and belief that is able to manifest itself.

So what does this mean for you and I? That it actually is possible to harness our brain power to bring about a certain result. So I encourage you try it. Pick something that you want to improve with, and create a mental picture of what it looks like when you are performing that action the way you want to. Pay special attention to use all of your senses to really “feel” the experience. Notice how your body reacts and feels as you see yourself performing the desired action; if this is a physical action (like shooting free throws), see if your muscles can feel the movement you see in the visualization. Feel the emotions and sense of pride or accomplishment. Hear the positive feedback from others. Use your five senses as much as possible. Repeat this everyday for at least 7 to 10 days, then try the action for “real”. You aren’t going to be perfect at it, but you should notice some improvement.

This can also be used to help you feel more confident and competent before dealing with uncomfortable situations such as confronting someone, giving a public speech, or asking your boss for a raise. Use your imagination! You might just see that we have more power to change our own reality than we ever thought!

How To Jump Start Your Dreams

Jump Start Your Dreams

by: Shelley Riutta MSE, LPC

“Nothing happens unless we first dream.” Carl Sandburg

“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” Christopher Reeve

Are you pursuing a dream that you are passionate about? Do you have a dream that you have sat on for years and have not taken action on it? Do you even know what your dreams are?

Dreams are actually part of our guidance system in life. They give us clues and a road map for what roads we should be traveling. So if you feel unclear or confused about your dreams you have lost touch with your “dreaming” self. Your dreaming self is that part of you that is connected with all of the possibilities in life. It is the part of you that truly believes in the magic and joy of living. It is the part of you that will guide you to the sweetest happiness and fulfillment you could ever imagine. So often people get disconnected from their dreaming self at a very young age by parents who stopped connecting with their own dreaming selves.

When I work with clients, part of the healing process is to re- connect with their dreaming self. The part of them that has expansive dreams. Very often they believe this part of them is not even there anymore -that it is lost and they never can retrieve this part of them. The good news is that this part of them never goes away—it is just buried under the limiting beliefs of their conditioning and fears. It may take a bit of time, but they can re-connect with this dreaming part of themselves and then start to listen to this voice.

You may be in that same position of being disconnected from your dreaming self too. If that is the case I will give you some tips to help you make this connection. Others of you may have some clarity about your dreams, but you have not taken action to pursue your dreams—I will address how to get beyond this too.

Tips to Reconnect with your Dreams

Let Go of Your Critical Thinking- To hear the voice of your dreams you first must quiet the critical voice inside. If you think of what it is like to share a dream with a friend and they shoot it down with criticism. How likely are you going to share your dreams with that person again? Not very likely. It is the same way with your internal voice of criticism. If you bring a dream into your own mind and right away you find ways it won’t work or judge it as a stupid idea—the voice of your dreaming self will grow silent and pretty soon you have stopped dreaming. Open up to being loving and supportive of your dreams. This will create a safe environment for your dreams to come forward and be voiced inside of you.

Make a list of 100 things you would like to Do, Be or Have- This may be a bit of a challenge to start this, but as you work on this list you will be taking the heavy lid off your dreaming self and it will begin to speak to you—and you will be able to add things to the list. By starting the list you are priming the pump for more ideas to come through. Here are some examples of things you may have on your list: travel to Hawaii, learn to salsa dance, learn to paint in watercolors, go on a weekend camping trip alone, take a family trip to the Grand Canyon, start your own business, be more adventurous etc.

Notice When You Like What Someone Else is Doing- Sometimes our dreams are brought forward because we see someone else living them. This can sometimes come out in a statement like “Oh, I wish I could do that”. For example if you have a friend who travels a lot and you love to hear the stories of her adventures—this may be a dream of yours that you should take action on. Pay attention to when you feel this way –this can give you clues to your own dreams. What do you see other people doing that you would LOVE to do?

Forget about the “How” When You Are Dreaming- You may disregard your dream because you can’t see how this dream could ever happen. You may say “I could never quit my job and do this thing I love—I can’t see how it can happen.” The most important thing is to identify the dream and decide if this is the dream you want to pursue. I have seen over and over that once people decide and commit—and move forward in action towards their dreams—the pieces of the puzzle of the “How” fall into place. You will not experience this if you hang back and try to figure it out in your head “how” to do it before you will decide if you will do it. The ideas, inspiration and the “how” come to you after you decide and commit.

Go somewhere Special and Inspirational to Contemplate Your Dreams- Take time from your busy schedule to reflect on your dreams. Sometimes people are so busy with their day to day lives that they don’t have the time to reflect on their lives. You need time and space to drop down into your feeling self—that is where the dreaming part of you lives. Find a café or other inspirational place to go and reflect. Write at the topic of the page “If I could do anything I would……..”—and just let your mind drift and write down the ideas that come to you. And remember like I mentioned above to quiet your critical voice while you are doing this.

Decide You Will Love Yourself Enough to Honor Your Dreams- It is an act of self- love to listen to the voice of your dreams and to pursue these special dreams. Just like you want the people in your own life that you love so dearly to be happy and to pursue their dreams—love yourself in that same way and listen to your own dreams. The level of happiness you feel in your life is directly related to how well you are listening to your dreaming self—and taking these dreams seriously.

If You Are Not Pursuing Your Dreams or are Confused about Your Dreams—What Are You Afraid Of?- If you have been stalled on pursuing your dream, know that there are some fears that are holding you back—some of these are conscious and some of these are unconscious. If they are conscious fears that you are aware of—write them down. Look at what you wrote from the highest part of you—the part of you filled with faith and trust. From this perspective write a response back to this fear. An example of a fear could be “I could never make money at doing a job that I love—I have to just stay stuck where I am at—besides things are so unstable with the economy right now I can’t take any risks.” Your answer back could be “Yes you can make money at doing a job you love—it just takes time, effort and persistence. Trust that as we pursue what we love we will be supported on every level. We can take steps now to move in that direction and trust that the right opportunity will open up for us. We actually will be in a better position with the economy if we move in a direction of doing what we love rather than staying stuck out of fear.” Some of your fears may be more unconscious. To address these unconscious fears ask yourself on a piece of paper. “You aren’t taking any steps towards your dreams—why are you so afraid?” Close your eyes and just listen in to what thoughts pop into your head—or the feeling you feel in your body. Write the response down and do the same thing as I listed above—which is to write a response to this fear from the highest part of you.

Get Support- Out of everything I have listed above this is the most important tip of all. Get support from believe who believe in you and the beauty of your own dreams. In my last Life Purpose Mentoring Group some of the people had these dreams in their hearts for years, but never took action to pursue them. With the support of the program they made more progress in 3 months than they did in 10 years of sitting on their dream. Others were able to step out of the confusion of going around and around again about trying to figure out their Life Purpose and were finally able to get the clarity they needed to move forward. It was amazing—it was like seeing a group of people become alive again after years of holding themselves back and not fully living. The power of positive, inspirational support is a key element in moving beyond your fears into the joy of living your dreams.

Begin today to re-connect with your dreaming self and listen to its beautiful wisdom. Allow this wisdom to guide you to a life that is filled with joy and possibility!
