Stop Comparing

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others – 6 Dominant Techniques on What You Need to Know

by: Amanda Walker

Have you ever heard that old saying “Do not compare your insides to his outside”? While the saying might be intended to teach a lesson about comparing your personal emotions to what others emotions seem to be about the same situation, the advice is still solid – don’t compare yourself to others. But that advice can be hard to follow, no matter if you are talking about emotions, jobs, spouses, cars, and the list goes on and on. And not following it? That can be even worse, and can have devastating effects on your personal happiness, and on the relationships you have with others. So how can you stop comparing yourself to others?

1. First, you must decide what it is that you want out of life. Why compare yourself to an award winning novelist, if that isn’t even what you want out of life? By focusing on what you want out of life and the path you are taking to get there, it’s easier to stop comparing yourself, and the path you are taking, to that of others.

2. Be aware. When you find yourself comparing, make a conscious effort to stop. When you refuse to play into the myth of social hierarchy, you are free to be happy with the path you have chosen. You also give others permission to be happy with their path.

3. Support the success of others. When you are supportive of and happy for others and their success, you don’t have time to be bitter toward them for their success. And you don’t have time to compare yourself to them.

4. Remember, there are always going to be people who have more than you do. The key to being happy with yourself, and to stop comparing yourself to others and what they have, is to realize that what you have is enough.

5. When you feel yourself slipping, count your blessings. Really – make a numbered list, and write down every single thing you are blessed with and grateful for. You’ll feel happier about what you do have long before you run out of blessings to write down.

6. Learn that imperfection is okay. Internalize it. None of us are perfect, and striving for “perfect” is a fool’s errand – life isn’t perfect. This can go right back to the idea of being happy with what you have, not with what you think is perfect.

These are just a few simple ways to stop comparing yourself to others. As you can see, it’s less about stopping a behavior, and more about learning to think differently about your life, the path you have chosen for yourself, and the things and people in it.
