Step-By-Step Guide To Living Your Dreams
By Rick Rouse
We all have dreams of what we would like to accomplish in life, but only a handful of us will ever achieve them. Why? Because most people are content to just sit back and “wait for their ship to come in”. But in every generation there are a few “lucky” individuals who manage to grab onto the brass ring and live the life they always dreamed of. What’s their secret? Read on and you’ll find out…
Here are eight not-so-easy, but very realistic steps to living your dreams:
- Write down your dreams on a sheet of paper. This takes them out of the realm of dreaming and turn them into goals. Tape this paper to your bathroom mirror, your computer screen, or some other place in your home or office where you’ll see it each and every day.
- Read up on the lives, backgrounds and habits of those who have already achieved the dreams you are aspiring to. What skills did they have to acquire in order to do what they’re doing? What kind of education did they have to get in order to “qualify”? Did they catch any “breaks” along the way that helped them reach their goals?
- Take what you learned in step 2 and apply it to your own life. Do everything you can to “follow in the footsteps” of the people who already “made it”.
- Make sure you meet the educational requirements for your dream profession. In many fields, proper education is the key to success. For example, if you want to be a doctor you have to go to medical school, and all the dreaming in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t enroll, study hard, and graduate.
- Be willing to expand your dream to fit your own personal realities. For example, if you would love to be able to make a living in professional sports but you’re about as athletic as a fence post, you can always shoot for becoming a coach, a trainer, a sports photographer or a broadcaster.
- Keep your resume constantly up to date so that you’ll be ready and able to act quickly when something comes up.
- Make your own breaks. If you just sit around the house waiting for the phone to ring, you’ll most likely be waiting for a lifetime. Get out and knock on doors, make phone calls and attend industry events and functions. Always be in a position to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.
- Don’t give up. Failing doesn’t mean you’ll never find success, it just means you haven’t found it yet. The vast majority of the people who have made it big in life fell flat on their faces their first time out of the box, and many of them were handed a number of setbacks before they finally found success. Experience (otherwise known as failure) is an important part of the educational process.
Conclusion: Being able to live your dreams is not only possible, it is virtually guaranteed if you’re willing to prepare yourself, learn from your mistakes, be realistic when setting your goals, and refuse to give up. Simply decide what you want out of life, and then do the things that are required in order to get it!
