The Next Level

Take Your Best to the Next Level!

by: Jennifer Ransaw Smith

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: your best is no longer good enough. I know…I know…it sucks, but it’s the truth and what this means is “you don’t get brownie points for doing something you’re supposed to be doing,” to paraphrase a Chris Rock routine!

If someone hires you, they expect your best…Period. Average is no longer an option. And “doing just enough” simply isn’t a consideration. Boy, have times changed. Remember when people used to say, “Showing up was half the battle,”-talk about low standards! Today, people not only expect you to show up, they expect you to bring your “A” game with you.

Last week, a dear friend called me extremely excited about a recent interview. She is a Sr. level executive in a very competitive and cut-throat industry…advertising. Her resume is peppered with uber impressive clients and her skill set is excellent. However, the reason for her call was that after almost 20 years in the industry, she had just had “the best interview in her life.”

She said for the first time ever she “put it all on the line and totally went for broke.” She said after evaluating her skill, value and talent she realized that they weren’t doing her a favor by considering her for a position-she was doing them one. So during the interview, she laid down her expectations, asked how taking that position would benefit her and her family and capped off the interview by delivering a creative and compelling commercial she created. She was personally blown away by how fierce she was…and so was the company.

But as we sat on the phone and delighted on what had just transpired, we couldn’t help but ask ourselves what prevents us from showing up fully EVERY TIME? Why do we act so timid when we enter the unknown? Why don’t we swing from the fences more often?

As women entrepreneurs, we got into the game for a reason and it most likely wasn’t money. We delved into the abyss because of our passion and our love of the game. So it’s time to remind yourself of that. Remember to put the time in and think of ways you can elevate everything you do.

Ask yourself what can I do to take this to the next level? And the next? I remember when I was at The Portfolio Center in Atlanta studying copywriting after undergrad. They used to advise us to write down 100 great headlines, when we were trying to find “the one.” Then, toss them all out and start from there. The first 100 were simply scratching the surface.

What can you do to knock the socks off your clients’ feet and have them running back begging for more? You’ve probably discovered by now that the best client is a happy client. So what can you do in addition to delivering a superb product or service that will nurture that relationship? Maybe you could surprise them by sending them to dinner for their anniversary? Or maybe you toss in a free service or introduce them to someone you think they would benefit from knowing? Give it some thought on a regular basis; you will be surprised by what you are able to come up with.

Question everything. Why are things done the way you do them? How can you improve on the status quo? You will be surprised the things you do just because “they are always done that way.” Stop! Start asking why and see what you can improve upon.

Now, more than ever, business owners need to create value, and the best way to do that is to make it a habit to swing from the fence.

Your “Define You” Weekly Assignment:

Throw average out of your vocabulary. Start looking for ways you can smash the competition and industry by going above and beyond and creating an undeniably fierce brand.

1. Take a long look at your industry and identify three things that are currently being done that need to be improved upon. Now, list ten ways you can improve upon each of them.

2. Toss that list in the trash and come up with a real doozy that will make your clients stand up and take notice. Be fearless.

Self Inflicted Mind Control

Mind Control is Good

by: Richard Blackstone

Consider this thought which seems to be a constant thought in the world of the separation paradigm of the universe: “I want more money.” Many of us have thought and verbalized that mantra all of our lives. If what we repeat thousands of times is supposed to manifest into our physical reality, why don’t we have more money? The answer is that you have been given exactly what you created.

Here’s how powerful you are and why you need to be conscious. You have thought, told and beseeched the universe “I want more money.” The universe has heard your request and has granted you just that.

The key to the creative process is the word “I,” which the universe recognizes as its wake-up call in creating. “I am” is the most powerful statement you can make concerning creation. God has declared that “I am that I am” as the creator of the all. You, being one with God, use the great “I am” in the same creative manner.

After you have the universe’s attention by saying the word “I,” and invoking the power of “I am,” you are ready to send the universe your powerful creation. You said the words “I want more money.” The universe understands and sends your creation back to you in physical form. You now have in your physical reality the “wanting of more money.”

And you will continue to have this “wanting of more money” until you create something else about money. You could create from a thought that says, “I have money.” But if you know this is not true, then a better thought might be “I have money coming to me now.” Then hold that thought, speak those words, and do action steps in alignment with that. The universe has no recourse but to manifest that into your reality.

I repeat again, it is a matter of choice and being conscious enough to monitor your thoughts in order to serve you best. If you don’t monitor your thoughts, then the thought you select may not be the highest thought, which is joy. If you don’t monitor your words, then you may not speak the clearest words, which are truth. If you don’t monitor your thoughts and words you may not select the proper actions that allow you to experience the highest feeling, which is love.

All of this happens when you are not conscious of the creative process. The key is to be conscious and one of your best tools is to monitor your thoughts and words to align you with the highest vision of who you are.

You may think that this constant monitoring of your thoughts and words is a form of mind control. And you would be right. The difference here is that you are the one who does the mind control instead of being the subject of constant mental manipulation by the world that we live in. You are being told how to act, what to wear, what to say, who to know, what to believe, and other information designed to make you conform to somebody else’s standards. Isn’t it better to set your own standards and control your own thoughts?

That’s the nature of the world when we think of ourselves as separate from each other and the world seems divided into the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots.’ In this world we are not told and manipulated into believing that peace and love are our nature.

In fact it is quite the opposite. We are told and manipulated into the belief that accumulation and being the winner in the game of life is what we must strive for. At all costs you must avoid being a ‘loser.’ Talk about mind manipulation.

Would you not serve yourself better by manipulating your own mind to conform to your standards, which are in alignment with your vision of who you are? Would you not serve yourself better if the thoughts that you choose to think about are your own joyful thoughts and not those of others? Would you not serve yourself better if the words you spoke were the words of truth, as you have defined your own truth, rather than words of another? Would you not serve yourself better if you chose actions that are based in love rather than in reactions that are based in fear? Would you not serve yourself better to consciously create your life as you intend it to be in order to fully realize who you are and who you choose to be, rather than to sleepwalk through your life and constantly react to your unconscious creations?

It is entirely up to you to decide. All life is a choice. You choose the thoughts you wish to pursue. You choose the words to interpret those thoughts and you choose the action necessary to bring those thoughts and words to fruition in the creation of your life.
