Embrace Life’s Challenges As Adventure

Embrace Adventure

by: Ted Ciuba

success-strategies Today, I want to talk about turning adversity into triumph. The leading personal achievement scientists have reached the same basic conclusion on the subject. Weick and Browning ask, “How do you design an interpretation system that motivates people?” Their answer: “Frame the world as a series of opportunities rather than as a series of threats. “

Similarly, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi concluded, “Of all the virtues we can learn, no trait is more useful, more essential for survival, and more likely to improve the quality of life than the ability to transform adversity into an enjoyable challenge.”

Okay, here we are in interesting times. The economy is in chaos. So turn adversity into an interesting challenge. Embrace adventure! Here’s what I say in chapter 8 of The NEW Think and Grow Rich:

“So if this is the most useful trait, essential to success, why don’t you simply embrace adventure?

“This frame makes the necessary quality of persistence easy. It’s connecting with your goal, quest, and definite chief aim with intensity of purpose. There’s no strife—there’s passion.

“There’s no discipline required in the conventional sense of the word—you’re in passion. There are no failures; there’s engagement, and calls on your prowess.

“Problems aren’t something to be avoided but opportunities for you to turn to advantage and abundance. Misfortune into gain.

“It’s always been the way of the hero.

“Don’t expect smooth sailing all the time! It’s the Law of Nature—like the Law of the Seas— it’ll never happen.

“Rather seek to become competent to navigate any sea, any air space, and any situation you find yourself in with grace and success.

“Isn’t this the kind of pilot you would prefer to have if you were about to take off in turbulent weather? Or would you prefer a pilot unseasoned by adversity? Or worse, one who loses it when things get turby?”

Turn misfortune into gain. Embrace adventure!

Go That Little Extra Mile

by: Ted Ciuba

The whole premise of my articles, and the basis of my business philosophy, is that we get so much for so little. When we invoke the Law of Leverage by going the extra mile we tend to receive not an extra mile back, but miles and miles and miles.

And so it was just this morning, when I went out for a walk. It’s a beautiful day, about 17 degrees Fahrenheit, sunny; it’s January. I went out for a walk along the edge of the golf course, and then I saw a small lake—and I got to enjoy looking at and listening to the ducks that were there.

Now, this is an extra experience; this is a pure example of an illustration of the rewards you receive by going the extra mile….

Let me explain…

When I set out to do my walk, I didn’t intend to walk that far; I didn’t even know the lake existed, and wouldn’t have had that holomagic experience. But when I got as far as I knew I was going, then I could see more. I could see farther, I saw new vistas, and I went for it in the moment.

And that’s the kind of thing we all do. That’s the whole reason why we invest this brief time for some kind of inspirational, motivational, or strategizational message every day. And I’ll tell you another thing about it: this fits over into our businesses, of course, but it also fits over into our relationships—family relationships, friendship relationships, and relationships with God and Nature.

Go that little extra mile, and in addition to what you do for the other person, you yourself are the beneficiary.
